Every Believer a Priest – June 2022 Every Believer a Priest – June 2022

What did the Holy Ghost do to them at Pentecost?

You are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light”  (1 Peter 2.9 NLT). Above all else, the Spirit comes to make every single true believer into a priest – not anointed with oil, but with the Holy Ghost Himself.

What was the Role of the Priest in the Old Testament?

In Psalm 134, we can see that God intended the priest to be bringing blessing  every moment, and this Psalm is about the night shift coming on:

“Come bless the Lord, all the servants of the LORD, who stand by night in the House of the LORD.  Lift up your hands in the holy place, and bless the LORD” (Psalm 134)

Surely, You have to be Ordained to be a Priest?

Nowhere in the New Testament is the Leader of a church called a priest.  Leaders were called Elders.  It was between about 200 and 300 AD that Christian leaders started to be called “priests” – this was borrowed from Greek and Roman religion, where it meant someone who had a special, intermediary, relationship with a god – this misuse of the word “priest” gate-crashed its way into Christianity, made leaders into a higher caste, and slowly made the idea that all believers were priests meaningless! They were then labelled “the laity” – people.

You are already bringing Blessing to others  – You are a Priest

It is common for people to think:  who am I?  How could God possibly use me? It’s not possible for me to be part of the Royal Priesthood of all who have put their faith in Jesus, the great High Priest.

Many years ago, there was a vicar in a parish in the USA.  He too reviewed his life and concluded that he didn’t have an effective ministry.  He contacted his bishop, Bishop Phillips Brooks, for a talk.  Bishop Brooks was a very famous evangelist – a kind of Billy Graham of the 1800s. He had an international ministry, and many, many, had come to faith through his words.  The vicar told him how unsuccessful he felt he’d been over years of ministry.  Nobody had ever come to faith through his preaching.

The Bishop asked him to recall a girl called Ruth, who had once come to him for confirmation class.  The despairing clergyman could barely recall her, and then commented that even she disappeared before confirmation.   Knowingly, the Bishop told the vicar it was because her parents had both died, and she and her siblings had only an older brother to take the role of parent – sadly, he had a drink problem and often beat up the children.  In one fit of alcoholic despair, he asked his sister, to help him.  How could a twelve year old girl help a young man with severe depression?  She could only think to give him the notes she had taken in the vicar’s confirmation class.  He read those notes and surrendered his life to God.

At this, the vicar was greatly encouraged.  He then asked Bishop Brooks how he knew this story.  The senior cleric replied, “Because I am that elder brother.”
